We decided to start documenting the average daily gain (ADG) of weight we are seeing for some of our young bucks. The ADG is calculated by taking the buck’s weight, subtracting the birth weight and dividing that by the number of days old the buck kid is. We do not do any special feed for our kids and do not try to feed excessive amounts of feed to them. The kids are in pastures with their mothers until they are three months old. After being weaned at three months old, the buck kids are put in pastures together and all of them are fed together with some mature bucks. We feed a 16% protein goat pellet feed while they are grazing on pastures.
Below are four buck kids that we had documented weights for initiating our ADG program. All four buck kids had very good ADG numbers. Here are the focus areas we will have for going into our 2013-14 kidding season.
  • MAUL Flash Alert was the number one buck in gaining weight during the first half of 2013. His sire is MAUL Jumping Jack Flash now owned by Mark & Kim Hammack. We had two buck kids out of Flash and both were the best at ADG. We want to see if Flash Alert offspring will produce similar results that he had. Flash Alert’s dam is MAUL Royal Red. She will be bred with MAUL Partner that is a half brother to Flash. We want to see what her offspring will be when bred to another buck.
  • MAUL Proud Stats was close behind Flash Alert in ADG and he was from a set of twins. We don’t have his sire, MAUL War Ammo, anymore so we will be watching the offspring of MAUL Check My Stats bred toXtreme’s Strategic Assets. Strategic Assets was the sire of MAUL Strategic Design that was the fourth buck kid doing well this spring.
  • MAUL Pack’n Heat was our third place buck kid in ADG. His dam died this summer in an accident so we will not be able to see what her impact was in his ADG. We do have the sire, MAUL Partner, that will be the main breeding buck for our does with a strong red gene. Partner is also the sire of Pack’n Heat that has already shown Good ADG numbers.
  • MAUL Strategic Design came in fourth best in ADG this summer. His dam was sold but his sire is Xtreme’s Strategic Assets and he is the main breeding buck for all of our traditional color does. He has also bred several does that have been sold and guaranteed bred.
